FedEx Holiday Surcharges Explained

From roughly October through January, FedEx and UPS add peak season surcharges to residential deliveries, oversized packages, and certain service types. These are separate from normal rates and stack on top of your base shipping cost, fuel surcharge, and any other accessorials. In 2024/2025, FedEx residential peak surcharges ranged from $6.30 to over $30 for very large packages.

When do peak surcharges start and end?

Peak surcharges typically kick in late October (around week 43–44 of the calendar year) and run through mid-January. The exact dates vary each year and are announced by FedEx and UPS in August–September.

Can I avoid FedEx and UPS peak season surcharges?

Not entirely if you're shipping residential. Options include: negotiating a rate cap with your account rep if you have high volume, shipping earlier in October before peak rates begin, using USPS Priority Mail which doesn't have the same peak surcharge structure, or building the surcharge into your product pricing.

Does the fuel surcharge apply on top of peak surcharges?

Yes. Fuel surcharges are calculated as a percentage of your base rate and apply year-round. During peak season you pay both: the peak surcharge (flat per-package fee) and the fuel surcharge (percentage). They compound.
